Many of us want to help Western North Carolina to recover after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. I asked myself, what could I personally do?
As the hospitals struggled to get back onto the power grid, the news kept repeating that there was already a blood shortage before the storm. Coupled with the Baxter International plant flooding (The plant made products for IV fluids crucial to the health care system), our hospitals need us.
Hospitals were originally off the power grid, creating a need for existing blood to need to be moved to other hospitals able to properly store the units (Including the Asheville Blood and Platelet Center). The storm also triggered a critical need when blood drives were forced to shutter across the Southeast. More than 2,500 blood donations went uncollected in the aftermath of Helene. Those outside affected areas are encouraged to schedule a blood donation to help restock the shelves.
After reaching out to the Red Cross, I was informed that the holiday season is always very difficult time for blood donation. I committed Middle Creek Insurance to having a Blood Drive on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2025 from 10am to 3pm. Everyone loves a challenge, right?
